Five Practices for Early Literacy

Learning to read begins before children start school.  Help your child develop early literacy skills with these five practices!

Talking with children helps them learn oral language.  It builds their vocabulary and stimulates brain development.  Talking with children includes listening to what they have to say!

Singing and rhyming increase children’s awareness of the sounds in words, preparing them to decode written language.

Reading together is the single most effective way to help children become proficient readers.

Writing and reading go together.  Writing and scribbling help children learn that letters and words stand for sounds and that print has meaning.

Playing helps young children learn about the world.  General knowledge of the world helps children understand books and stories once they begin to read.
