London Public Library is open to all individuals without regard to age, race, religion, national origin, mental or physical disability, social or political views. The library is dedicated to providing an atmosphere conducive to study, reading and the legitimate use of library materials and services.
In order to foster this environment, it is necessary that each person act in a manner which is respectful of library functions and considerate of other patrons and library staff. Any behavior or conditions which disrupt the orderly use of the library, normal library operations, or affects the staff’s ability to provide service to the public is prohibited. Patrons whose behavior is disruptive or in violation of library policy may be asked to leave the building.
The following behavior is not permitted because it interferes with the use of the library by others, is a health or safety hazard or because it is not consistent with the mission of the library:
- Sleeping, playing games disruptively and/or other activities which interfere with the use of the library.
- Using the library without shirt or shoes.
- Wearing swimsuits in the building.
- Eating or drinking in designated areas of the library. Drinks used in the building must have a secure lid.
- Smoking on library property.
- Playing audio equipment so others can hear it.
- Using the restrooms as bathing or laundry facilities or as gathering places.
- Using rollerblades, roller skates, skateboards, or other sports equipment in the library or on library property.
- Bringing a bicycle into the building, unless authorized.
- Blocking aisles so access to library materials and services is prevented.
- Loitering
- Entering unauthorized workspaces or office areas.
- Interfering with another’s legitimate use and enjoyment of the library and its materials.
- Acting in a manner which is disruptive or distracting to others, including public displays of affection.
- Soliciting library personnel or patrons on the library grounds.
- Utilizing the library while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
- Disregarding normal bodily hygiene practices to the extent that it becomes offensive and constitutes a nuisance to library patrons and staff may prohibit library usage.
- Taking photographs and/or recording videos of Library staff or patrons without their permission.
When necessary the library will work with law enforcement authorities to prosecute actions for criminal behavior against the library, its patrons and staff, including but not limited to:
- Loud, abusive, aggressive, threatening, harassing, or obscene language and/or behavior (disorderly conduct).
- Defacing library materials including books, newspapers, recordings or other items of the library collection. Nor shall patrons deface or in any way destroy or damage library furnishings, walls, machines, or other library property.
- Using or distributing illegal drugs.
- Circumventing or attempting to circumvent the library security system.
- Tampering with, altering, editing or damaging computer hardware and/or software.
- Causing panic.
In the event of an emergency, patrons shall comply with instructions from library personnel.
Animals are not permitted in the library except for those assisting disabled persons and those involved in library-related programs.
Valuables and personal belongings should not be left unattended. The library is not responsible for
damaged, lost, or stolen articles.
All cellular phones must be used in a non disruptive manner and should be set to silent or vibrate. If cell
phone usage becomes disruptive to other patrons or to staff, the user will be asked to step outside the
building to finish their call.
